Tote bags did not get their name until the 20th century, but bags, in general, are believed to have been around since the 17th century. The tote bag that we recognise today has its origins in the 1940s when US company LL Bean created their first bag for carrying ice and wood. Given the carrying convenience, spacious storage, and minimal maintenance, people soon started favoring totes over heavier suitcases. If you look at historical archives, you will see depictions of men and women in almost all cultures wearing some earlier forms of textile pouches and satchels to carry around their belongings. Leather, cloth, other vegetal fibers were all materials people used since the dawn of time to create all sorts of useful bags. To tote, in fact – meaning to carry. Back in those days, toting meant carrying your stuff in some sort of a bag or sack. Those bags, while not likely similar to the totes we know and love today, seem to have been the precursors of our modern totes.
Nowadays, tote is the most adaptable of all bag styles. Tote bags are not just practical accessories; they are also powerful tools for self-expression and style.
